R22 Freon is a refrigerant that they are phasing out that is true and now the new air conditioning refrigerant is 410A but don’t throw out your old R-22 air conditioner because the air conditioning company said they don’t have that refrigerant any more!

This is not true and it is a scam in my book to strong-arm you to buy a new air conditioning system. Yes it is true that the cost of R-22 refrigerant is on the rise and the some day will phase it out but the have a new drop in replacement for R22 and you can still buy R22 refrigerant!

I was called out for a residential service call the other day! The owner had a York system maybe 8 years old looking great except for the leaves from the tree were all inside and plugging the condensing unit! He had 3 different companies come out and all told him he needed a new system!

I was surprised to hear and see this awesome air conditioning system that was going to be thrown out and the reasons why! I cleaned the condenser unit by pulling the top off and getting all the leaves out! Took my co2 tank and blew out the condenser coils!

I noticed the system high side service port cap was missing and no refrigerant was in the system! I put my nitrogen tank to use and applied 300 psi of nitrogen in the system to leak test and repair the leak! I checked all the wields with my refrigerant leak detector bubbles nothing??

Repairing your older air conditioner without replacing. I decided to remove my gauges and see what was going on! To my surprise the High side service port that was missing the cap was leaking! I think one of the service techs had loosened the shredder valve so all the refrigerant leaked out!
Beware HVAC contractors selling you a new air conditioner
I cannot prove this but why was the cap missing and the valve loose? Ok no other leaks I tightened the vale and put my vacuum pump on the system and it pulled a nice vacuum assuring me there are no other leaks. I held the vacuum for 30 minuets to make sure no other leaks are present.

I recharged the system with R22 refrigerant and had the owner turn on the Air conditioner. The air conditioner worked perfect and we talked about keeping the condenser clean and possible removing the brush and tree’s around the unit! This customer was happy to have saved the quoted $8500.00 for a new air conditioning system but just some minor repairs!

It makes me feel great as a contractor give help people out and be 100% honest repairs for each and every service call! So my advice is to people who are being told there is no R22 that is a lie and don’t be strong-armed by the dealer to buy a new air conditioning system!
