Lets talk a little about the beeping codes for Hoshizaki

My unit is beeping 1 time every three seconds. What do I look for?  Hoshizaki ice machine stopped making ice beeping

When the machine beeps once every 3 seconds it indicates the HIGH TEMPERATURE SAFETY switch has been triggered.

The HIGH TEMPERATURE SAFETY is activated, when the thermistor which is mounted on the suction line reaches a temperature of 127° F. When this occurs it will shut the unit down, trigger the alarm, and lock it out on a manual reset safety.

Some of the reasons for a High Temperature safety alarm are as follows. You will find these possibilities included on the control board diagnostic label located in the compressor compartment. Follow the instructions provided on the label to reset the alarm and check these areas to locate the problem.

  1. Check to see if there is a mechanical problem with the hot gas valve sticking open or with the control board relay sticking.
    1. Check for a temperature differential across the hot gas valve.
    2. To check for a sticking relay, use a volt meter to check for voltage on pink wire, pin # 2 on the K1 connector.
  2. Hot water migration can also cause this. This typically happens at night when the only piece of equipment requiring water flow is the ice machine.
    1. Hot water migration is a tough problem to find and to prove to the customer. The best way to determine that this is happening is to place a temperature recorder on the inlet water line of the ice machine. The recorder will show when migration occurs.
    2. Usually hot water migration is due to a defective mixing valve in the existing plumbing. A good place to check is the pre-wash area at the dishwasher.
  3. stuck head master on a remote air cooled condenser unit operating in a high ambient condition.
    1. The best way to check for this is to carefully touch the liquid line connection at the rear of the unit. Also, check for heat at the inlet pipe to the receiver tank. If these areas are hot, the head master is likely stuck in the bypass mode.
  4. Check for a shorted thermistor. If the thermistor reads approximately 500 ohms or less the control board will lock out on this safety.
    1. A shorted thermistor will signal zero ohms and cause repeated shut down on HIGH TEMPERATURE SAFETY.

2 Beeps Long Harvest Cycle Hoshizaki ice machine stopped making ice beeping

Long Harvest cycles: The board will automatically return the unit into freeze if the harvest cycle has lasted over twenty minutes. If this occurs two consecutive times the board will shut the unit down and sound the twobeep alarm.

Once you have confirmed that you have a 2-beep alarm, it must be reset. To reset the alarm, access the control board and press the alarm reset button while the board is beeping. The reset button is located next to the yellow and orange light on the control board. This may be a white or black button. Simply press and release the reset button with the power ON and the machine should begin its start up sequence.

The control board has a 20-minute defrost back up safety timer, which protects from excessively long harvest. The 2 Beep Alarm has told us the machine did not terminate harvest within 20 minutes for two consecutive cycles. The harvest termination is accomplished by temperature and time. The temperature on the suction line must reach 48°F at the thermistor. This is communicated to the control board through the thermistor as approximately 3.9 KΩ. Once the control board receives a 3.9 KΩ signal, the Defrost Completion Timer starts. When the timer has completed (normally 60 seconds however may be as long as 180 seconds), the board will terminate harvest and initiate freeze. Note: The control board has a built in minimum harvest time of 2 minutes.

3 beep error  Long Freeze Cycle Hoshizaki ice machine stopped making ice beeping

This is when the safety alarm engages and locks the machine out on a manual reset, 3beep audible alarm. The freeze cycle on Hoshizaki KM ice machines is controlled by water level. As the ice is being formed on the evaporator the level of water in the reservoir drops.

4 beep error Shorted Circuit on Mechanical Bin Sensor Hoshizaki ice machine stopped making ice beeping

BIN CONTROL TEST  The new bin control assembly mounts in the unit using the two thumbscrews that mounted the thermostatic bulb. To test the control, allow the unit to cycle into freeze for approximately 1 minute. Push the actuator to the right and the unit should shut down within 3 ~ 5 seconds. When you remove your hand, the unit should restart in the 1 minute fill cycle within 3 ~ 5 seconds.

If you get 4 beeps every 3 seconds the connection between K-4 has a short circuit.

5 Beep – Open Circuit on Mechanical Bin Sensor

BIN CONTROL TEST  The new bin control assembly mounts in the unit using the two thumbscrews that mounted the thermostatic bulb. To test the control, allow the unit to cycle into freeze for approximately 1 minute. Push the actuator to the right and the unit should shut down within 3 ~ 5 seconds. When you remove your hand, the unit should restart in the 1 minute fill cycle within 3 ~ 5 seconds.

If you get 5 beeps every 3 seconds the connection between K-4 has an open circuit.

6 Beep – Low Voltage supplied to Machine Hoshizaki ice machine stopped making ice beeping

6 Beeps = Low Voltage: This code is one of two automatic reset errors provided by the board. It signals a low voltage situation. If the voltage drops below 92 volts +/- 5%, the control board will start the six-beep alarm and shut down the unit. Once the proper voltage is supplied to the unit, the alarm will stop and the unit will return to normal operation.

7 Beeps – High Voltage Hoshizaki ice machine stopped making ice beeping

This code is the opposite of the one above and signals that the unit is experiencing a high voltage situation. If the voltage exceeds 147 volts +/- 5%, then the unit will sound the 7-beep alarm and shut down. Many times this problem is related to a “stinger” or “high leg” being supplied to the unit, which can usually be solved by swapping the two legs of power at the back of the unit. This alarm like low voltage is automatically reset. For more information on the high voltage alarm.

These are some tips about resetting the Beeping codes for your Hoshizaki ice machine. Please note you should always make the repairs to your ice machine to prevent damage to your maker.  Always hire a licensed refrigeration contractor that is certified and factory trained for Hoshizaki
